In the 1860’s a team of oxen pulled the building down Main Street on rollers to its current site at the south end of the village.
This is the building at its current site in the 1890’s when it was both a Town Hall and a gymnasium.

Note the elaborate gingerbread architecture typical of the Victorian period on the Town Hall tower next door.

In the 1930’s there were at least seven (7) gas pumps on Main Street, including this Esso station which stood on what is now the Museum’s parking lot. At this time the building housed the Stowe Fire Department and the Water & Lights Company.

Note the road signs to Jeffersonville, Smugglers Notch and Mt. Mansfield at today’s junction of Routes 100 and 108, the "Mountain Road."

This photo taken in 1953 is of the Stowe Fire Department when it was located in the building.
The Fire Department occupied the building from the early 1900’s until 1973.
