The Ski Hostel Lodge in Waterbury Center was owned and operated by Martha Guthridge from 1956 to 1983 and offered cross country skiing as early as 1974.  According to her 2007 obituary on, Martha (Stern) Guthridge was born in German and immigrated to the U.S. with her family at the age of twenty.  She was one of the first female ski instructors in the country and started a ski school at Pocono Manor Inn in PA before moving to Waterbury in 1948 where she opened the Ski Hostel Lodge.

The Ski Hostel Lodge provided lodging and unmarked trails with guided tours and instruction until its close in 1983 when Guthridge retired to Stowe Vt.
