Return to Lost Nordic Ski Area List Sitzmark Ski Touring CenterWilmington, Windham County, Vermont
Location: East Dover Rd., Wilmington, Vt. 05363 Directory listings: 1979-1993 Known operators: Eddie Flaim Today: Sitzmark still operates as a golf course and bar and grill, but no longer offers cross country skiing
History Sitzmark Ski Touring Center in Wilmington was listed in directories from 1979 through 1993. They offered between 25 and 40 km of trails and 1 km of nightskiing as early as 1985. Eddie Flaim was listed as the operator between 1984 and 1986, though according to a New York Times article about ski touring, Flaim operated Sitzmark as early as 1978. "Sitzmark," which has German origins, is the depression made in the snow when a skier falls over backwards. There are other ski related facilities called Sitzmark, including a former Sitzmark Ski Shop to the west of Ascutney Mountain on route 44 opened in 1961 by Tom Tomasi--judging by the distance (approx. 1.5 hours from Brownsville to Wilmington) the two have no connection. Sitzmark of Wilmington still operates today and includes a Sitzmark Lodge, Sitzmark Golf Course, and Sitzmark Bar & Grill. When I called in Fall 2013, a Sitzmark representative said they haven't offered cross country in about two decades but assured me that nearby Timber Creek Cross Country Center "is the place to go when the snow flies these days." ____________________ See full listing of directory entries for Sitzmark Ski Touring Center here. |
