History

Montpelier Elks Ski Touring Center was listed in cross country directories between 1983 and 1987. In the 1984 and 1985 directories, the center was listed as being operated by Warren Kitzmiller--founder and owner of Onion River Sports, Inc. in Montpelier from 1974-2000. Charles Talbert, listed in the 1986 directory, was the last known operator.

The Montpelier Elks Ski Touring Center operated at the Montpelier Elks Country Club, a nine-hole public golf course on Country Club Road in Montpelier, owned by Elks Lodge #924. The Lodge and Country Club offered 15 km of skiing with 2 km of lit trails for night skiing.

Today, Elks Lodge #924 still operates the golf course and it is open to the public. In the fall of 2013 I called to enquire about cross country skiing on the premises and was told that they used to offer cross country, but don't anymore. However, the representative also said they were trying to think of something to offer at the course in the winter and I was encouraged to call back and check in a few weeks as they may choose to offer cross country again.
