Vermont Academy Vermont Academy (VA), a private preparatory school located in Saxtons River, VT started their ski program in 1934 under the direction of Dartmouth graduate Ted Gregory. The three-event program was formed as an official club program under the auspices of the Eastern Ski Association. Gregory was instrumental in building an alpine hill, ski jump, and cross-country course on and near the Vermont Academy campus. Following Gregory’s departure in 1937, Warren Chivers joined the Academy and became know as the “the father of VA skiing” serving the Academy for more than 40 years. A new 30-meter ski jump, designed by Chivers with the aid of Fred Hansen was built in 1949. The nordic program soon flourished and continued to be one of the stronger programs on the prep school circuit. Over the years, VA has produced many junior national team nordic skiers and has been a valuable feeder program for the collegiate circuit. Over the past eight years, Alexi Sotskov, the head nordic coach and the Director of Skiing has been instrumental in continuing the strong nordic tradition at Vermont Academy. |
