2003 Vermont Ski Museum Hall of Fame Induction

10 th Mountain DivisionIn honor of your contributions to Vermont skiing and your service to your country.

"Climb to Conquer"

In 2003, the Vermont Ski Museum Hall of Fame selected the Vermont members of the US Army's 10 th Mountain Division in WW II to receive this prestigious recognition. Our research has determined that more than 260 individuals are part of this elite group. Their heroism during the war deserves recognition in itself- and their contributions to the growth of skiing in Vermont and elsewhere after the war are remarkable. Together, this group represents many of the skiing industry's elite of the 20 th Century. This induction provides the opportunity for all of us to recognize and thank them for their sacrifices and contributions.

The list of over 260 inductees (and growing!) was compiled from the rosters published by the National Association of the 10 th Mountain Division, beginning in 1945. It was then distributed to all of the 10 th men whose current addresses were found in hopes they could add names. The collection of names has always been considered an ongoing project.

The Museum needs your help!

Provide the Museum with ANY information about the Vermonters who served in the 10 th . Thanks to the generosity of Erling Omland's family and friends a fund was established for a computer database. The biographical information on any Vermonter who served in the 10 th during WWII will be in the system and available to Museum visitors and researaltchers. This can be constantly updated and improved.

Friends and family of 10th Mountain Veteran Albert "Midge" Tozloski have donated the funds in his honor for the Museum was able to put this database on online. Midge is pictured to the right when on November 23, 2011, he rode the first chair of Stowe's new Forerunner Quad. Midge was a life-long skier and a great friend to the Museum.

Donate objects to the Museum's collection! If you have photographs, scrapbooks, objects, memorabilia, or written accounts of experiences in the 10 th or related to your post War life, please consider donating them to the Museum; these personal recollections will make the exhibit special and Vermont-specific.

Record your stories! Vermont Folklife Center will be recording oral histories for the Veterans History Project. This project is a partnership with the Library of Congress and the American Folklife Center. The US Congress unanimously voted to start this program to collect wartime memories and to engage the American public in its own history.

Learn more! The Museum shop has books and videos about the 10 th . The National Archives of the 10 th Mountain Division, housed in the Denver Public Library, has a database of all members of the 10th . It is available online at www.10thmtndivassoc.org .
